Book: The Irish Visitor
Synopsis: At the end of the Civil War, two women on a devastated South Carolina rice plantation – one a freed slave, the other her former mistress – are at each other's throats over ownership of the plantation. Either way, rice farming is now a doomed enterprise. One day, a starving Irish immigrant with thirty tiny bags of mysterious seeds sewn into her underskirt wanders in. To persuade the women to let her stay, she tells them her seeds will make a profitable crop. As disasters destroy all crops and hope, she comes up with another money-making idea, then another. Despite the women's schemes to run her off, the Irish visitor is always one step ahead. Lindy Keane Carter is a medical science writer whose work over the last 40 years has appeared in numerous national magazines, trade publications, and academic medical journals. Author of acclaimed pre-Civil War novel, "The Rice Birds," her fiction has won awards from the South Carolina Arts Commission's Fiction Project, as well as by the South Carolina Academy of Authors.
