When circumstances meant that they had to be away for long periods of time, even early settlers chose to take something of home with them. This began a tradition of carrying some dirt from the homeplace in a small sack. They would put a pinch in each shoe everyday reminding them they were never far from home. Thus it is that islanders like to say that they have Pawleys Island sand in their shoes. Eugene B. Chase Jr. |
